PRIMETIME PENGUINS, MAD 5 AND ATLANTIC SPORTSWEAR 2010 CHAMPIONS
by Jon Soule posted 07/19/2010

Sunday’s Ocean State Classic playoffs was filled with close games and very competitive play.

In the Men’s Open division there were 6 games decided by two goals or less and two overtime games in the quarterfinals.   In an Ocean Division re-match Gilbane Insurance defeated 2009 Champion Team Sohei in overtime by a score of 7-6.  Gilbane Insurance fell short in the semi-finals to MPH Builders by a score of 9-7.   MPH’s goalie was lights out.   New England Boat Works prevailed over pesky team The Factory with a 5-4 overtime victory.    MAD 5 squeaked by Weekapaug Groove in the quarterfinals by a score of 7-5 and then rolled to 11-6 and 10-6 victories over New England Boat Works and MPH Builders to take the championship.

The High School division had three of four playoff games decided by two goals or less.     128 Black held off Mass Elite White in a 8-7 victory.    128 Black did not fare as well against their brothers from 128 Green in the quarterfinal falling 9-4.   In the other semi-final, the Primetime Penguins scored in the last minute of regulation to break a 7-7 tie to defeat the Ocean State Whalers 8-7.    Primetime had another tough match against 128 Green in the finals but went ahead by a goal with minutes to play and sealed their Ocean State Championship with a late goal to win 6-4.

The Grand Master division was all Atlantic Sportswear, all the time.    Atlantic went undefeated in the pool play scoring 31 “goals for” versus 2 “goals against”.    As the number one seed they blew out the Reapers 10-0 in the semi-final.   In the other semi-final match, Piv’s Pub avenged their pool play loss to Checkmate with a very impressive 7-1 victory.   In the finals, talent deep, Atlantic, never let Piv’s get any closer than 2 goals.    Piv’s never gave up but Atlantic’s constant line shifts kept fresh bodies on the field and they prevailed 9-5.

Congratulations to 2010 Champions MAD 5, Atlantic Sportswear, and Primetime Penguins!

The Ocean State Classic Tournament Committee wants to thank all the teams for participating in this year’s tournament.   Each year we strive to make your OSC tournament experience even better!    We are preliminarily looking to expand to two venues next year (Glen Farm and nearby Roger Williams University).    Our plan is to elevate the OSC to the  premiere tournament for Adults and High School players in New England.   We plan to initiate a national advertising campaign for the 2011 Classic to attract teams from around the country.    Our expectation is to significantly expand the field of each division.   You will receive an e-survey shortly for critical input on how we can improve the tournament experience.   Please take a few moments to provide your comments.

Finally, thanks to all our volunteers!    Without their help the OSC would not happen.   The OSC is the main fundraiser for the Rhode Island Chapter of US Lacrosse.     Our chapter provides funding to start-up youth, high school and college programs in Rhode Island.  We also provide training for coaches.    Your participation in the OSC goes a long way to growing the game of lacrosse throughout Rhode Island.

Thanks again!

See you at the 2011 Classic!
